Field note / AI memory
AI memory needs a human-auditable contract
Good AI should not imitate a person. It should help that person notice, compare, and decide better.
The problem with invisible memory
AI assistants become more useful when they remember context, but invisible memory creates a trust problem. If the assistant cannot point back to a human-readable note, it is hard to tell whether the answer came from a current decision, an old draft, or a private detail that should not have been reused.
My preferred pattern is local-first and evidence-led: keep the durable source in a reviewable knowledge base, then let agent memory operate as a retrieval and routing layer. The assistant can summarize, search, and connect context, but it should not become the only place where the context exists.
The useful moments are practical: a meeting transcript turns into risks and next questions, or an assistant uses reviewed everyday context to suggest an angle I had not considered. The value is not imitation. The value is better judgment with the source still visible.
The contract
- Source notes stay readable by a person, not only by a model.
- Derived synthesis pages link back to sources and name confidence, assumptions, and open questions.
- Memory supports judgment; it does not clone private style, identity, or voice.
- Sensitive details are archived only when useful, and reused only at the lowest level of specificity needed.
- Project facts that can drift get dated and rechecked before they drive public claims.
- Private family, health, employer, and financial details do not become public portfolio material.
Why this belongs here
Working with AI is not just model selection. It is also context care: which evidence is authoritative, what the assistant is allowed to infer, how stale claims are detected, and how humans correct the system when it remembers too much or too little.
A human-auditable memory contract is a small but practical operating layer. It makes agent work more repeatable without turning private notes into a public dataset or treating every past conversation as reusable ground truth.
Public boundary
This note describes the method, not the private contents of the underlying vault. Public examples should use synthetic notes, public repositories, and inspectable templates. The value is the operating pattern: source, synthesize, retrieve, verify, and expire.
